Born in South Africa, raised in Auckland and now based in Dunedin (mostly) - Tyler shifted south to be with his twin sister who was studying neuro-science at the University of Otago.
Stent's works tell stories. He beautifully portrays emotion through the eyes of his subject, which are almost always painted in watercolour.
Many of his 'characters' are from India or Nepal - painted from photographs that he and his friend - (Lachlan Bylhouwer) have captured whilst travelling in those regions. (The two met in Nepal following the catastrophic 2015 earthquake). The photographer and Stent have not only photographed and painted members of various Nepalese families caught up in the disaster - they befriended and set about helping them.
Many of Stent's works have become a part of this humanitarian effort - its art, its story and life. Proceeds from these works are going to an account to fund education for the children Tyler portrays.
Tyler successfully paints the emotion behind the portrait - there is a strong narrative aspect to his work, which is not surprising considering this young artist has now written and published five books.
Tyler has since decided to finish up a tattoo apprenticeship & working as a chef to concentrate on his artistic career.
Since his first solo - (and sell out) show in August, 2017, Tylers works have gone from strength to strength. He has travelled the world extensively, has exhibited successfully in London, has three major street art / public works in Dunedin, at least four further sell out shows, collaborated with a handful of other artist's (including Jon Thom, Matt Smith, Al Bell, Stephen Martyn-Welch & others) as well as illustrated the award-winning short story Moireach writted by and self-published with Donna Rutherford.
